Class A or Class B Driver

Due to a sustained increase in business volumes, Swartz Moving & Storage is actively seeking qualified drivers to bolster operational capabilities at our agency in Portland, Oregon. Qualifications and Skills Profile:

• Must be 21 years of age.
• Education or experience matching:
High school diploma, or
General education degree (GED), or
One to three months related experience or training, or
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license.
• Have an acceptable motor vehicle record.
• Working knowledge of DOT regulations.
• Meet the physical standards of the DOT.
• Satisfactorily pass pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable cause drug and alcohol tests.
• Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations.
• Working knowledge of preparing paperwork associated with household goods and freight shipments.
• Ability to handle receipts, read maps, road signs, and maintain logs.
• Ability to supervise crews of various sizes.


Basic Job Description

Position entails performing all aspects of moving our customer’s household goods (or other materials) from origin to destination. Tasks may include preparing a detailed inventory, protecting, loading/unloading and transport of goods. Loads may be long or short haul, and may require work at any hour of the day or night. Driver will be exposed to elevated noise and vibration levels while driving the vehicle, and will be required to perform jobs in all weather conditions. Additionally, Swartz and United expect drivers to present themselves in a professional manner, including attitude, work ethic and appearance.

The successful applicant will be expected to satisfactorily perform all essential tasks. The tasks listed below are representative of duties and responsibilities required:

• Safely operate a variety of vehicles, including tractor-trailer, straight or bobtail trucks, in all types of weather and traffic conditions.
• Stay alert while driving for up to ten hours at a time.
• Hook and unhook trailers from tractors.
• Raise/lower trailer landing gear by cranking handle for three minutes by repetitive motion.
• Load and unload trailer, either unassisted, or with the assistance of helpers, warehouseman or dock workers. Use of forklift may be required.
• Secure all shipments by pad-wrapping, strapping and/or bracing, as required.
• Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying of household goods and other freight of varying sizes and weights. Goods will often require moving up or down stairs, across rough terrain, and over long distances.
• Lifting of up to 150 pounds. Regular lifting of a minimum of 50 pounds over the head without assistance, and 100 pounds with assistance.
• Supervise movers as they remove or deliver items to and from homes, offices, docks, etc. Supervision shall insure that items are moved in such a way as to eliminate the likelihood of damage to goods or surroundings.
• Use appropriate tools to prevent damage to items or surroundings, including floor runners, door jam protectors, cardboard and pads.
